Scotland’s Dario Franchitti has won the 2007 Indy Racing League (IRL) Championship. In a roller-coaster season, which saw Dario win the Indy 500 and come through four consecutive race crashes, the battle for the Championship came down to a nail-biting last day decider with Scott Dixon.
Dario went into the season-finale at Chicagoland Speedway holding a three-point lead over Dixon, and the pair battled it out in a thrilling race with the destiny of the title up for grabs until the final seconds of the season. Dario managed to pass title rival Dixon on the final lap to win the race and, more importantly, clinch the 2007 IndyCar Series championship. Dixon ran out of fuel and coasted across the finish line in second, while Franchitti took the checkered flag and began his celebration.
Franchitti finished with 637 points to claim his first IndyCar championship with New Zealander Dixon 13 points adrift. Franchitti, said, "I think it's cool that it came down to Scott and me. It comes down to Scott and me on the last two corners of the last lap. That pretty much sums up the year. Coming down the last lap I knew what I had to do. I drafted him out as well as I could, just pulled out going into Turn three. And as I pulled out I saw his car twitch and with him losing the drive, he shot up the track. I had to avoid him and went higher than I would have liked. Once I corrected that, I knew that the race and championship were ours.” – 9 September 2007
