Dan Wheldon has become the first Englishman since Graham Hill, way back in 1966, to win the world-famous Indianapolis 500. From a starting position of 16th, Wheldon stormed through the field in a gripping race which saw 27 changes of race-leadership, to claim the greatest prize in IRL.
“That is definitely the proudest moment of my career,” the IndyCar Series points leader said after watching a video tribute of his move from the 16th starting position to hold off Rahal Letterman Racing’s Vitor Meira and Danica Patrick and Herta. “I absolutely love this place. It’s truly the best race in the world and the best racetrack in the world.”
Wheldon, who now begins a whirlwind Victory Tour in New York, thanked his teammates, crew and team co-owners Michael Andretti, Kim Green and Kevin Savoree “for helping me get to this spot.”
This has been a dream come true for me," an emotional Wheldon said after the traditional milk-drinking celebrations on the Indianapolis podium after his victory. "I've loved the Indianapolis 500 ever since I was a little kid in England. And you can see what a race it is. The best drivers in the world are here. The best teams in the world. I'm having an emotional moment. I'm just so glad."
Dan has now won four of the five IRL races this season and looks set for the IRL title. - 29 May 2005
