Montoya wins British Grand Prix

Juan Pablo Montoya today claimed his first victory of the 2005 Formula 1 season with a scorching performance at a sun-baked Silverstone. The Colombian secured his first win for the Mercedes-McLaren team from a starting position of third on the grid. In a thrilling manoeuvre at the start of the race, Juan Pablo out-paced Jenson Button and then went wheel-to-wheel with current world championship leader Fernando Alonso as the pair headed into the famous Beckett’s corner.

It was a battle of wits which was won by Juan and he never relinquished pole position from that point onward as he expertly fended off all challenges until he took the chequered flag. The win is Juan Pablo’s fifth career grand prix victory. – 10 July 2005
