Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya today won the Brazilian Grand Prix for the second consecutive year. On the first lap most of the grid got away safely with Championship leader Alonso speeding off into the lead, however there was an early incident which led to the yellow flag being raised. On the restart on lap 3, Montoya managed to overtake Alonso and take the lead and he dominated the race from this point on.
Montoya’s latest win has boosted his world championship position to third place with 60 points. Team McLaren Mercedes finished an impressive one-two, the first time in five years that the team took the two leading finishes in a Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso may have won the individual driver’s championship at Interlagos but, with only two races left in the current season, Montoya and McLaren have their sights set on the prestigious constructors’ championship. With Juan in such excellent form, not many would bet against them doing just that. – 25 September 2005
