Dan Wheldon was today crowned the 2005 IRL Champion, and in doing so has confirmed his status as one of the hottest global properties in motorsport.
Wheldon secured the title at Watkins Glen International when the race became official at the halfway point. Dan is the first Briton since Nigel Mansell to be crowned America's IndyCar series champion. Dan has been unstoppable this season, becoming the first driver in IRL history to win six times in a single series. One of those victories came in the world-famous Indy 500. He completed the 2005 series with 11 top-five finishes, and has failed to finish only one race.
His skilful and risk-taking driving has led Dan to become a firm household favourite in America. Following his win, a delighted Dan commented: “To win The Indy 500 and the championship in the same year I think is an unbelievable achievement it’s taken all the energy out of me.” – 25 September 2005
