Dario Franchitti won the last race of the IRL 2005 season in Fontana, California today. It was a thriller, and the Scotsman took victory by a hair’s breadth, beating his Andretti Green team-mate Tony Kanaan to the finish-line by 2 car lengths (or 0.117 seconds).

The head-to-head battle between the two drivers at speeds over 215 mph was a fitting climax to a great IRL season. Dario’s victory was his second of the season and the 11th overall win for team Andretti Green in the 17-race series, and confirms their position as the dominant team. – 16 October 2005
