Indianapolis 500 champion Dan Wheldon started his season in winning style at the Daytona 24 Hours in Florida.
Wheldon, along with co-drivers Scott Dixon and Casey Mears, took the lead with six hours remaining. The Briton, who won an Indy 500 and Indy Racing League double last season, held on to win America's prestigious motorsport endurance race. "There are some famous names that have won this race, and to be on that list is very, very special," he said.
Fellow Briton Allan McNish's hopes of a first win at Daytona ended with engine problems. The Scot, who was racing alongside Danica Patrick, Jan Lammers and Rusty Wallace, was in contention for a win before overheating problems struck. – 29 January 2006
