| Sandy joined the European Senior Tour in 2008. He became the first Briton to win The Open Championship since Tony Jacklin in 1969 when he lifted the Claret Jug in 1985 at Royal St George’s. Three years later he became the first Briton to win the Masters Tournament when he triumphed at Augusta National in 1988, famously hitting a seven iron from the bunker on the last to set up a winning birdie. A teenage prodigy, who made his debut at 14, he was a prolific winner before turning professional in 1977. He went on to win 18 European Tour events. As one of Ian Woosnam’s Assistant Captains for The 2006 Ryder Cup, he played his part in Europe’s record-equalling nine-point winning margin at The K Club, marking a successful return to the Ryder Cup fold for the first time since 1987. Sandy now plays most of his golf on The Champions Tour in the US.
